If He is good
He’s the only one
So there’s no wonder why it’s hard to believe
Our only experience is with others who are not good—at least only good
And even those who are good in part had to fight to be that way and
battle still to stay that way.
And we are to trust God when all of life has taught us not to trust
Even if we can generally trust a person we are aware that we cannot
completely trust them.
There are always areas where people cannot be trusted—even it it’s not
because of a bad heart-maybe just a lack of ability or a benign personality
The most reliable individual perhaps cannot be trusted to make dinner
or balance the checkbook or take out the trash.
In this context of not only learning that others cannot be trusted, but
that I cannot be trusted, I am supposed to somehow accept that there is a higher
power who is “Good”; meaning he can be trusted completely.
But even if this tale is true, what if I don’t care for his goodness?
And so his goodness cannot be trusted to act in ways I find agreeable? It may
sound glib and glowing to say God is good, but it betrays my every experience
and questions my with regard to my desire for true goodness.
